MEET OUR FOUNDER…

Dr. Geoff Nugent is a passionate believer and advocate that CHANGE IS POSSIBLE – for clients and for professionals to grow, learn, and become a better version of themselves.  Driven by this core value, he brings innovative, integrative solutions and approaches, that span clinical, behavioral, and neuroscience, to help clients transform themselves and their lives to find hope, healing, and renewed purpose.

Geoff Nugent, Ph.D., LMFT, LPCC, BCPC, CSPC, is a dually Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Board Certified Professional Clinical Counselor. He holds a Marriage Family Therapist (LMFT) licensure in six states (Nevada, California, Arizona, Idaho, Utah, and Texas), and is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). With training and clinical expertise in trauma-focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), ADD/ADHD, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), autism spectrum issues, bully prevention, crisis intervention, positive parenting, sports psychology, Dr. Nugent works with and leads his Team to help individuals, couples, and families who have depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, adjustment, ADD/ADHD, addiction, self-esteem, and relationship needs.

Dr. Geoff is the founder and owner of Nugent Family Counseling Center, which since 2015, offers convenient office locations in San Jose and Los Gatos, California, and Reno, Nevada as well as telehealth therapy options.  He leads a team of clinicians and staff who believe and encourage that Change is Possible.  With this demonstrable conviction, Dr. Geoff and his collaborative team provide Clinical, Behavioral, Neurofeedback evidence-based and brain-based services to Private Practice, School-based Partnerships, and EAP program Clients.

Dr. Geoff received his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. His Masters in Counseling Psychology was attained through John F. Kennedy University in Pleasant Hill, California, graduating in the top 5% of his class.  Dr. Geoff Nugent went on to earn his Ph.D. in Health Psychology from Walden University with recognition for his outstanding 4.0 scholastic achievement. His dissertation focused on adolescents and the effects of video games on quality of life and resilience.

Dr. Geoff’s work experience was founded in the non-profit and school sectors. Dr. Geoff worked at the non-profit organization, EMQ Families First Mobile Crisis team as a family specialist. There he provided county-wide suicide assessments for children and adolescents. He advocated and implemented integrative wrap services to bridge family, school, and community support structures and resources for children struggling with mental health or behavioral challenges. He then worked for over 10 years with the Campbell Union School District. Starting as a Special Education Therapist at a middle school, Dr. Geoff advanced to serving as Supervisor of Behavior and Mental Health, all while pursuing his Ph.D. and working in an entrepreneurial private practice. He gained experience leading individual and group counseling sessions, performing administrative duties, and understanding the needs of diverse populations.

Dr. Geoff brought brain and neuroscience-based Neurofeedback to his practice in 2017. Dr. Geoff is passionate about the role Neurofeedback can play in addressing and improving issues and goals for clients by training the neuroplastic brain to re-regulate, balance, grow, and heal. Neurofeedback outcome is transformative alone. It also enhances the efficacy of other clinical therapeutic modalities and methods when done concurrently or in sequence.   He has seen clients journey to successful resolution or outcomes with Neurofeedback and a Neurotherapeutic approach, including complex formerly treatment-resistant cases involving trauma/PTSD, ADD/ADHD, anxiety/depression, rumination, long covid brain fog, sleep issues, and peak performance. 

In 2018 he completed nearly 30 hours of certification through University of Chicago training on “Understanding the Brain: The Neurobiology of Everyday Life”  Dr. Geoff has completed the BCIA 36 hours of didactic training and is working on finalizing his credentialing for both BCIA and QEEG.  In addition to his clinical therapeutic work with clients since 2009, Dr. Geoff has overseen and conducted QEEG Brain Map assessments and Z-score-based protocol treatment management for a wide variety of hundreds of cases. 

He is a member of the California Marriage and Family Therapy Association (CAMFT), American Psychological Association (APA), American Psychotherapist Association, American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), the National Exercise and Sports Trainers Association (NESTA), and on the Board for Nevada Coalition for Systemic Counseling (NCSC).
